Minister of Koperasi Teten : Community Contribution to Koperasi is Still Low

Minister of Koperasi and SMEs, Teten Masduki noted that the contribution of the Indonesian people to Koperasi is still low, which is only 8.41 percent.
“At present Koperasi have not become the first choice for the community as economic institutions and business entities. This can be seen from several aspects, the low participation of Indonesian citizens who are members of Koperasi, and the low contribution of Koperasi to the national economy,” Teten said in the National Koperasi webinar on Monday (7/13).
Teten said, the United Nations (UN) noted that 16.31 percent of the world’s population became members of Koperasi, but in Indonesia only around 8.41 percent joined Koperasi.
The existence of Koperasi in Indonesia has an important role for every institution and member who runs it, one of which is to develop the economy.
While the contribution of Koperasi to the Indonesian economy in 2019 is only 0.97 percent, and this figure is still relatively low, when compared to the average contribution of Koperasi to the world economy around 4.30 percent.
“This condition is caused by constraints related to management regulations and human resources access to financing and supervision, which may concern us building a cooperative business ecosystem that allows Koperasi to grow,” he said.
Teten said, as an economic institution, Koperasi also have a role as social institutions. Where is economic democratization and as an educational institution that always builds a culture of learning between members through cooperative business practices.
“We feel that the cooperative’s role is absolutely necessary, so that the cooperative can provide maximum benefits for the welfare of members, he said.
Even so, Minister Teten saw Koperasi in general as having made a positive contribution to the Indonesian economy, where 123 thousand cooperative units were able to encourage the formation of a 5.54 percent ratio of the GDP of Koperasi nationally, and absorb 0.45 percent of the total workforce in Indonesia.
“Of the total number of Koperasi currently still dominated by savings and loan Koperasi, and savings and loan units which reached 59.9 percent, and concentrated on the island of Java reaching 44.65 percent,” he concluded.
The presence of Koperasi in Indonesia is expected to help the fate of those who need jobs, because with the presence of Koperasi many workers will be needed to manage their businesses. Everyone can also learn to manage finances and get income every month from the management of this cooperative. Basically, Koperasi can provide opportunities for workers and absorb human resources.
