Aquatic Venue PON XX Papua Obtains Recognition From FINA Meets Olympic Standards

Detiktoday.com – In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) through the Papua Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center has completed the construction of the sports arena for the XX National Sports Week (PON) in Papua Province which has been postponed from 2020 to 2021.

Three of the four sports venues built by the Ministry of PUPR have been physically completed ahead of the end of the contract period, namely the aquatic arena in the Sports area of ​​Kampung Harapan, East Sentani District and the cricket arena and hockey field (Indoor and Outdoor) in Doyo Baru Village, District Wow.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the completion of the construction of the PON XX sports venue was carried out carefully, starting from the design, construction and supervision stages while still paying attention to the safety aspects which involved supervision from the Construction Safety Committee (Committee K2).

“It is hoped that the completion of the PON venue will not only be the pride of Papuans, but also be the pride of all Indonesian people and can encourage young people, especially Papuan athletes to be more enthusiastic and excel in becoming champions, both at national and international levels,” said Minister Basuki some time ago.

The construction of the aquatic venue which is equipped with international standard pool facilities, on Monday (7/27/2020) has received world certification or recognition from the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) or the parent organization of the international swimming sports federation. The aquatic arena is now recognized as meeting Olympic standards.

The certification activities include checking and measuring the dimensions of the pool with a random sampling method carried out by the Chairperson of the PB PRSI Certification Division in the Supervision of Consultants Specialist in the International Swimming Federation (FINA) from Spain through the Video Conference media because of the Covid Pandemic – 19. Based on the results of the checking and measurement it was concluded that the Field of Play or PON Venue Aquatic PON Pool in Papua was in accordance with international standards set by FINA.

Director of Strategic Infrastructure Directorate General of Cipta Karya Ministry of PUPR Iwan Suprijanto said, while the certification activities included checking and measuring the dimensions of the pool with a random sampling method conducted by the Chairperson of the PB PRSI Certification Division in the Supervision of Consultants Specialist in the International Swimming Federation (FINA) from Spain through the Video Conference media because it can not be present directly due to restrictions on access to enter Indonesia.

“Based on the results of these checks and measurements, it was concluded that the Field of Play or PON Venue Aquatic Match PON Papua was in accordance with international standards set by FINA,” he explained.

“The hope is that investment in sports infrastructure built in international standards in Papua can be an investment in sports achievements, especially swimming,” said Iwan.
